What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease wherein the vision loss occurs due to damage of the optic nerve. Though hard to detect , glaucoma could only be detected  through a complete dilated eye examination. While there is no cure for glaucoma, early treatment can frequently halt the damage and help preserve your vision.

During Glaucoma, the optic nerve that sends visual messages from the eyes to the brain is not able to send the messages due to high pressure in the eyes  called intraocular pressure (IOP). The eyes impacted by glaucoma are referred to as glaucomatous.

The eyes produce a clear fluid called aqueous humor responsible for nourishing and cleansing of the eyes. This fluid after cleansing the eyes  should flow out of the eye through a mesh-like channel called the drainage angle but during glaucoma this channel gets blocked and the fluid starts accumulating in the eyes leading to an increase in the pressure inside the eyes. Ayurvedic treatment of  glaucoma can help to overcome this problem in a safe and natural way

In ayurveda language Adhimantha (glaucoma-like condition) is said to develop when   complications in eyes are left untreated or neglected  due to Abhisyanda (conjunctivitis or inflammatory eye disease). Glaucoma type, i.e., primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), is a form of Adhimantha, regulated mainly by Pitta and Rakta doshas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ayurvedic treatment effective for glaucoma?

Ayurvedic treatments for glaucoma are effective in the long run as it uses herbal and all natural products for the treatment.

What are some Ayurvedic treatments for glaucoma?

Ayurvedic treatments for glaucoma may include a combination of herbal remedies, dietary changes, eye exercises, and lifestyle modifications.

Can dietary changes help prevent glaucoma?

There is some evidence to suggest that a diet rich in fresh fruits, green vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce the risk of developing glaucoma. However, dietary changes alone cannot treat or cure glaucoma.

Are there any lifestyle modifications that can help manage glaucoma?

Certain lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise, reduction of stress, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, may help manage glaucoma. However, lifestyle modifications alone cannot treat or cure glaucoma.

What are various causes of Glaucoma ?

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to vision loss and it happens due to too much pressure inside the eye and can ultimately cause optic nerve damage. There are several reasons why this pressure builds up.

One major cause is the buildup of fluid inside the eye. Normally,

  1. The eye produces a fluid called aqueous humor, which drains out naturally which on getting blocked leads to the fluid accumulation and thereby increases eye pressure.
  2. Genetics also play a big role. If someone in your family has had glaucoma, you are at a higher risk of developing it too. In some cases, babies are born with defects in their eye’s drainage system, leading to childhood glaucoma.

Glaucoma can also happen due to eye injuries—whether from a strong hit or exposure to harmful chemicals, both of which can damage the eye’s internal system. Severe eye infections can also lead to inflammation and scarring, affecting the normal flow of fluids.

Another cause is poor blood circulation inside the eye. If blood vessels get blocked, it can impact the eye’s ability to drain fluid properly, leading to increased pressure. Certain autoimmune conditions, like uveitis (which causes eye inflammation), can also contribute to glaucoma by damaging the drainage system.

What is glaucoma and how does it affect vision?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for clear vision as it carries visual information from the eyes to the brain. This damage can result in vision loss, starting with peripheral (side) vision. Over time, if untreated, it may lead to tunnel vision or even complete blindness.

What are the early signs and symptoms of glaucoma?

In the early stages, glaucoma may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as it progresses, individuals might experience blurred vision, difficulty adjusting to dim lighting, increased sensitivity to glare, and in some cases, halos around lights—especially in angle-closure glaucoma.

Can glaucoma be detected early and treated?

Yes, early detection through regular eye check-ups is key. While vision loss from glaucoma can’t be reversed, timely treatment can slow or prevent further damage, helping to preserve eyesight and maintain quality of life.
