September is Healthy Vision Month: Essential Awareness for Aging Eyes

Healthy Vision Month

Aging is a natural phenomenon and so are changes which accompany them. The most common areas which are impacted include our vision. With a good vision power you could maintain your wellbeing as well as quality of life as you grow older. When you overlook such regular eye care and avoid preventive measures, it can lead to vision impairment or serious eye health conditions. In this blog, during Healthy Vision Month, we’ll talk about how to maintain healthy vision in aging adults, what are the common eye problems, and how we can effectively preserve the sight in the long run.

Why Is Eye Health Important for Aging Adults?

As we age, vision loss in older adults has a severe impact on their day to day life like performing simple tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. With poor vision power there is an increase in the risk of injuries, and individuals start getting secluded thereby contributing to a decline in overall health and mental well-being.
Vision care for seniors plays a vital role in improving quality of life. However all such eye problems associated with aging are preventable and many of them could be cured with proper treatment. If detected early. Building awareness about healthy vision habits and scheduling regular eye exams is the first step toward protecting sight.

Ayurvedic Awareness for Healthy Vision

Ayurveda is around 5000 years old, an ancient science of life that guides maintaining eye health naturally, especially as we age. Eye health tips for older people complement this ancient wisdom. Modern medical practices are not the only ones, but along with them, Ayurveda also offers time-tested remedies and dietary suggestions that promise to preserve vision and prevent age-related eye disorders. Various therapies in Ayurveda aim to raise public awareness, enabling people to recover from eye-related problems. Along with basic Ayurvedic medication, various eye therapies play a key role in nourishing our eyes.

1. Netra Tarpana (Eye Nourishment Therapy)

Netra Tarpana is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment where medicated ghee (clarified butter) is gently applied around the eyes to nourish and rejuvenate the delicate tissues of the eyes. Netra tarpan treats conditions such as dryness, eye strain, and stress, thereby enhancing an individual’s well-being.

2. Triphala for Eye Detoxification

Triphala is widely known for aiding eye health issues & is composed of three fruits, including Amla, Haritaki & Bibhitaki, and i. It is commonly advised in Ayurveda to support eye health. By consuming Triphala on a daily basis you can detoxify your body, improve the circulation in the eye area thereby preventing age-related degeneration.

3. Balanced Diet According to Ayurvedic Principles

Ayurveda emphasizes eating fresh, seasonal, and sattvic (pure and balanced) foods that nourish the eyes. Foods rich in Vitamin A and antioxidants—such as carrots, spinach, amla, and almonds—are recommended to strengthen vision and prevent dryness and fatigue.

4. Daily Eye Care Practices (Netra Dhavanam and Netra Basti)

Simple daily practices like washing the eyes with clean, lukewarm water (Netra Dhavanam) and gentle eye exercises improve eye muscle strength and circulation. Ayurvedic therapies, such as Netra Basti (a medicated oil bath for the eyes), are beneficial in managing early eye discomfort and supporting the longevity of vision.

5. Lifestyle changes

Restrain Screen Time: Ayurveda says that one must not get exposed to excessive screen time. It recommends minimising continuous screen exposure, taking frequent breaks, and rehearsing eye exercises (like focusing on distant objects) to prevent eye strain.

Proper Sleep and Relaxation: In Ayurveda, quality sleep and stress management are essential for maintaining eye health, as Vata imbalances (caused by stress and irregular routines) can lead to dryness and discomfort.

6. Herbal Eye Drops and Supplements

At Dr Basu Eye Care Centre, we provide ayurvedic herbal eye drops that are prepared at our manufacturing unit. Our eye drops are designed to help maintain eye moisture, reduce irritation, and improve vision naturally. Supplements like Amla (rich in Vitamin C) strengthen ocular tissues and improve blood circulation.
